About this event
Mafalda Minnozzi and Paul Ricci’s long association with master archtop luthier John Monteleone includes a gala performance at the opening of the 2011 “Guitar Heroes” exposition at NY’s MET Museum, so it was only natural for John to extend an invitation to them while they were on tour in Italy, to perform a classic Italian song at Cremona’s Museum of the Violin for the biographical film that will make its Colorado premier at the 2022 Rocky Mountain Archtop Festival at the “HARKINS MOVIE THEATER”.
In honor of their appearance in the film along with Mark Knopfler, Ben Harper, Anthony Wilson, Julian Lage, Frank Vignola and others, Mafalda and Paul will give a special performance that will take place in the theater before the screening of the film “The Chisels Are Calling”
Drawing from a varied repertoire that unifies the world’s classic songbooks, Mafalda will present selections from her 35 year career in Brazil, Italy, and beyond, with such varied tunes as Ennio Morricone’s “Metti una Sera a Cena” to Jobim’s “Águas de Março”, from Bruno Martino’s “Estate” to Django Reinhart’s “Nuages”, all together with some Cole Porter and Piaf, unifying the world’s great songbooks in a very personal improvisational style in passionate interplay with the guitar.
With a jazz sensibility Mafalda will tap into both her acclaimed Brazilian album “Sensorial – Portraits in Bossa and Jazz” and her latest “Cinema City – Jazz Scenes From Italian Film”, both produced and arranged by guitarist Paul Ricci whose unique finger style approach to Bossa and Jazz is full of surprises.
Paul Ricci is the proud owner of Monteleone’s second archtop, which is featured in the film’s performance.

- The film “The Chisels Are Calling” will have its Colorado premier at the Harkins Arvada movie theater during the Archtop Festival. This feature-length documentary film featuring David Grisman, Ben Harper, Mark Knopfler and others, is a profile of John Monteleone, one of the world’s greatest guitar builders and a living artist on permanent exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
“It was like meeting Stradivari,” recalls acclaimed musician Mark Knopfler who partakes in the film alongside the likes of musical luminaries David Grisman, Ben Harper and Frank Vignola, among others. John Monteleone: The Chisels Are Calling looks beyond the technical aspects of the cherished lutherie and examines the life, passion, talent and unique approach Monteleone takes to his art.
